Vladimir Putin threatens nuclear war to drive Nato out of Baltics and defend Crimea

Post-disaster painting. Source.

Vladimir Putin is planning to exploit the threat of nuclear war to force Nato out of countries bordering Russia, it has been claimed.

A secret meeting between intelligence figures in Moscow and Washington reportedly revealed Putin will consider any attempt to return the Crimean peninsula to Ukraine as declaration of war and will take any necessary step – including using nuclear weapons – to retain control of the region.

Notes from the meeting are also said to have revealed that Putin is planning imminent ‘destabilising actions’ in pro-Western Baltic states in a direct challenge to Nato’s promise to defend the countries from Soviet-style Russian expansionism.

These disturbances are thought to likely involve cyber attacks or ramping up local ethnic tensions in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania intended to unsettle the region…

Yes, and I’m willing to go to resort to nuclear war with Belarus over my continued access to .99 cent fish tacos.
    Putin’s a dope.

We need to be very careful in how we approach this. There has been a lot of bad diplomacy all around, and the Monkey in the White House is the worst of all. But it must be remembered that The Ukraine has been part of Russia for much of its existence. Crimea has been a part of Russia for much of its existence. The pieces from blowing up the Soviet Union have not all settled. I would expect some of the republics to fall back into Russia’s gravity.

Russia is historically paranoid about its borders and invasion. When you consider that she has been invaded twice by the Germans and once by the French, that paranoia is not very paranoid. They desperately want buffers around their borders.

This would be a lot like a foreign country mucking about in our South if the Confederacy had succeeded in seceding. It could push them to nuclear war.

We need to carefully consider what we can get in that part of the world, and it won’t be much.

Unfortunately with The Choom Gang in charge, thoughtful diplomacy ain’t gonna happen. And we have 674 days of danger before we’re rid of the POSOTUS.

Is it likely that the Ukraine, or Germany, or France, are going to march on Moscow any time soon? I rather think not, and the Russians don’t think it either. Russia is not afraid of its neighbours – it’s the other way around. Consider a small country like Poland: Attacked twice by the Soviets, occupied by them, by Imperial Russia before that, by Germany, by France. They have a legitimate reason to hate and fear Russia, to be “paranoid”. Will they be sacrificed to Russia because the West is afraid to stand up to that lunatic, Putin?

Having subjugated buffer states on your borders isn’t a right.

  • Now Putin is a cartoonish super-villain.

    1980’s much?
